Transformer Supplier in Nigeria

IEC-certified power transformers and electrical equipment engineered for Nigeria's grid rehabilitation, industrial zones, oil & gas infrastructure, and massive electrification needs.

Market Overview

Nigeria, Africa's largest economy and most populous country with over 220 million people, faces a significant infrastructure challenge: bridging the gap between installed generation capacity and actual electricity delivery to end users. The national grid operates at 50Hz with transmission voltages of 11kV, 33kV, 132kV, and 330kV, managed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and distributed through 11 Distribution Companies (DISCOs). The standard distribution voltage is 415/240V three-phase.

The Nigerian power sector is undergoing critical transformation through the Presidential Power Initiative (Siemens PPI) aimed at modernizing transmission and distribution infrastructure. With an estimated national transformer deficit in the tens of thousands of units, grid rehabilitation, industrial zone electrification (Lagos, Kano, Port Harcourt), and off-grid solar mini-grid deployment are creating sustained demand for distribution transformers, switchgear, and substation equipment.

Ziyao Power supplies a comprehensive range of IEC-compliant electrical equipment configured for Nigeria's operating environment. Our portfolio includes hermetically sealed S22-M oil-immersed transformers, SCB13/SCB18 dry-type cast resin transformers, KYN28 MV metal-clad switchgear, GCS LV switchgear panels, DW45 air circuit breakers, and YB Series prefabricated substations. All equipment is designed for tropical climate conditions with appropriate cooling margins, corrosion protection for coastal and Niger Delta installations, and certification to meet SON (Standards Organisation of Nigeria) and SONCAP requirements.

Key Demand Drivers

Presidential Power Initiative (Siemens PPI)

The $1.9 billion grid modernization program targets rehabilitation of 105 transmission substations and distribution networks. Phase 1 alone requires thousands of distribution transformers (33/11kV and 11/0.415kV) and associated switchgear.

Massive Transformer Deficit

Nigeria has an estimated deficit of over 30,000 distribution transformers. DISCOs across all regions urgently need replacement units for overloaded and failed transformers in residential and commercial areas.

Industrial Zone Electrification

Major industrial clusters in Lagos (Agbara, Ikeja, Apapa), Ogun State, Kano, and Port Harcourt require reliable substations and auxiliary transformers. Manufacturing and processing industries need dedicated transformers and switchgear.

Oil & Gas Sector

Nigeria is Africa's largest oil producer. Upstream extraction, refining (Dangote Refinery), gas processing, and petrochemical complexes require explosion-proof and high-reliability transformers and MV switchgear.

Solar Mini-Grids & Off-Grid

With over 80 million Nigerians lacking grid access, the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and private developers are deploying solar mini-grids requiring step-up transformers, inverters, and distribution switchgear.

Population & Urbanization

A population of 220 million growing at 2.5% annually, coupled with rapid urbanization in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, and Ibadan, drives constant expansion of distribution networks requiring transformers and associated equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is SONCAP certification and do your products have it?

SONCAP (Standards Organisation of Nigeria Conformity Assessment Programme) is the mandatory pre-shipment verification program for regulated products imported into Nigeria. All electrical equipment must have SONCAP certification before shipment. Our transformers and switchgear come with IEC type test certificates and manufacturer test reports that form the basis for SONCAP certification. We work with accredited SONCAP agents to process the Certificate of Conformity (Product Certificate and SONCAP Certificate) before shipment, streamlining the import and customs clearance process.

Q: What transformer capacities are most commonly needed in Nigeria?

For DISCO distribution networks, the most common ratings are 200kVA, 300kVA, 500kVA (11/0.415kV distribution transformers) and 2.5MVA, 5MVA, 7.5MVA (33/11kV power transformers for injection substations). We stock these common ratings and can supply larger units up to 2500kVA distribution and higher MVA power transformers on order. All units are wound for Nigeria's 50Hz grid with Dyn11 vector group (standard for Nigerian distribution transformers).

Q: How does the tender process work for DISCOs and TCN?

Nigeria's 11 DISCOs and TCN procure transformers and electrical equipment through competitive bidding. Tenders are typically published on the procuring entity's website, in national newspapers, and on the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) portal. As a manufacturer, we support your bid by providing complete technical documentation: IEC type test certificates, factory test reports, ISO 9001 certificate, SONCAP product certificates, manufacturer's authorization, and detailed compliance statements against tender specifications. We can also provide bid bonds and performance guarantees where required.

Q: What are your shipping and logistics arrangements to Nigeria?

We ship to Nigeria via sea freight to Lagos (Apapa Port or Tin Can Island Port) and Port Harcourt (Onne Port). Standard sea freight transit time from major export ports is 30–40 days. We handle all export documentation including commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, SONCAP Certificate, and Certificate of Origin for ECOWAS trade preferences. Door-to-door delivery including customs clearance and inland transport is available upon request. For urgent requirements, air freight to Murtala Muhammed International Airport (Lagos) or Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (Abuja) is available.

Q: Can your transformers handle Nigeria's grid instability?

Yes. We design transformers for the voltage fluctuations and frequency variations common in developing grids. Our S22-M series includes enhanced tap-changer range (±5% as standard, wider range optional), higher BIL (Basic Insulation Level) margins, and robust mechanical design to withstand frequent switching operations. We also provide under-voltage and over-voltage protection relay configurations in switchgear to protect transformers from extreme grid conditions.

Q: Do you provide after-sales support and spare parts in Nigeria?

We provide comprehensive after-sales support including remote diagnostics, on-site commissioning and testing by our engineering team, and spare parts supply. We can arrange local service partner support for routine maintenance and emergency repairs. Spare bushings, gaskets, tap changers, and protection relays can be dispatched via air freight within 1–2 weeks. All transformers carry a 24-month warranty from commissioning (maximum 30 months from shipment).
