Altitude Correction for Power Transformers: Derating, Insulation and Cooling Checks

Introduction

Transformer catalog ratings are normally based on defined reference service conditions. At high elevation, lower air density reduces cooling performance and insulation withstand margin. For overseas EPC projects, altitude correction must be checked before the transformer rating, enclosure, bushings and cooling method are approved.

This guide explains how buyers, consultants and utility reviewers can specify altitude requirements in an RFQ. The practical reference framework is IEC transformer standards, local utility requirements and the written project specification.

For high-altitude projects, do not order from a standard catalog rating alone. State the site altitude in the RFQ and require the supplier to confirm corrected kVA capability, cooling margin, insulation level and documentation for consultant approval.
