XGN15 vs XGN2 Switchgear: Ring Main Unit or Fixed Metal-Enclosed Cabinet?

By Ziyao Engineering Team2026-06-1710 min

Two Medium-Voltage Cabinets with Different Jobs

XGN15 and XGN2 are both medium-voltage switchgear families, but they are usually selected for different engineering purposes. XGN15 is commonly used as a compact ring main unit or load-break switch cabinet. XGN2 is a fixed metal-enclosed switchgear cabinet often used for standard medium-voltage distribution and incoming or outgoing feeder applications.

The right choice depends on the network structure, switching duty, protection requirement, available room size, and whether the project needs compact ring operation or a more conventional fixed switchgear lineup.

When to Choose XGN15

XGN15 switchgear is a strong choice when the electrical system needs compact medium-voltage distribution with ring network operation. It is often used in prefabricated substations, urban distribution networks, industrial parks, renewable energy substations, commercial buildings, and transformer protection feeders.

For transformer feeders, XGN15 can use a load break switch with fuse combination when the system design allows it. For more advanced protection, a circuit breaker unit with relay protection may be required.

When to Choose XGN2

XGN2 switchgear is normally selected when the project requires a fixed metal-enclosed cabinet for medium-voltage incoming, outgoing, bus tie, or transformer feeder applications. It is a practical option for industrial plants, utility distribution rooms, mining sites, and conventional substations where compact ring operation is not the main requirement.

If the project needs a withdrawable circuit breaker structure, higher configuration flexibility, or more modern IEC-style switchgear, compare XGN2 with KYN28A-12 switchgear before final selection.

Engineering Questions Before Selection

  • Is the network radial, ring, dual-source, or utility incoming plus transformer feeder?
  • Does the feeder require load switching only, fuse protection, or circuit breaker protection?
  • What is the rated voltage: 10kV, 11kV, 12kV, 24kV, or another project voltage?
  • What short-circuit current must the cabinet withstand?
  • Is the cabinet installed in a compact box substation or a conventional switchgear room?
  • Are there local utility requirements for metering, earthing, interlocking, or relay protection?
  • Does the project require IEC routine test reports, FAT photos, and export packing records?

Procurement Recommendation

Choose XGN15 when the project needs compact ring network distribution or transformer feeder protection inside a space-limited substation. Choose XGN2 when the project needs a fixed metal-enclosed MV cabinet for conventional feeder control and protection.

For EPC tenders, do not quote only by cabinet name. Provide the single-line diagram, rated voltage, short-circuit rating, protection philosophy, metering requirement, and utility standard. This helps avoid wrong cabinet selection, missing interlocks, or incompatible protection devices.

RFQ Checklist

  1. Single-line diagram and cabinet lineup.
  2. Rated voltage, rated current, frequency, and short-circuit rating.
  3. Incoming, outgoing, transformer feeder, metering, and bus tie functions.
  4. Load break switch, fuse combination, or circuit breaker requirement.
  5. Protection relay, CT/PT, metering, and communication requirements.
  6. Installation environment, cable entry, enclosure rating, packing, and destination country.
