VS1 vs ZW32 Vacuum Circuit Breaker: Indoor Switchgear Breaker or Outdoor Pole-Mounted Recloser?

By Ziyao Engineering Team2026-06-1710 min

Indoor and Outdoor Vacuum Breakers Serve Different Systems

VS1 and ZW32 are both vacuum circuit breakers, but they are not interchangeable in most projects. VS1 is mainly used inside indoor medium-voltage switchgear such as KYN28A-12 panels. ZW32 is an outdoor vacuum circuit breaker used on overhead distribution lines, pole-mounted installations, and rural or industrial feeder automation projects.

When buyers compare VS1 and ZW32, the first question should be installation location: inside a switchgear cabinet or outdoors on a pole or structure.

When to Select VS1

VS1 vacuum circuit breaker is suitable for indoor medium-voltage switchgear systems. It is commonly used in KYN28 cabinets for incoming feeders, outgoing feeders, transformer protection, bus tie panels, industrial substations, and utility distribution rooms.

VS1 selection should match the switchgear type, rated voltage, rated current, breaking current, mechanical interlock, earthing switch arrangement, and protection relay scheme.

When to Select ZW32

ZW32 outdoor vacuum circuit breaker is used for overhead line protection and outdoor distribution automation. It can be configured with manual or electric operation, CT/PT, controller, communication module, and reclosing or sectionalizing functions depending on the project design.

ZW32 is often used in rural distribution networks, industrial park feeders, mining sites, renewable energy collector lines, and utility overhead systems where the breaker must operate outdoors.

Automation Questions for ZW32 Projects

  • Does the project require recloser function, sectionalizer function, or simple breaker operation?
  • What controller is required, and does it need local utility approval?
  • Are CT and PT supplied with the breaker or by the project contractor?
  • Which communication protocol is required, such as IEC 60870-5-101/104 or another standard?
  • What is the mounting method: pole bracket, steel structure, or substation frame?
  • What outdoor environment applies: altitude, humidity, salt fog, pollution level, and temperature?

Selection Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using an indoor breaker model for an outdoor line application.
  • Requesting only rated voltage without breaking current and short-time withstand current.
  • Forgetting control voltage, motor voltage, auxiliary contacts, and closing/tripping coil details.
  • For ZW32, missing controller, CT/PT, communication, and mounting accessory requirements.
  • For VS1, not confirming cabinet compatibility and interlock requirements.

RFQ Checklist

  1. Indoor switchgear breaker or outdoor pole-mounted breaker.
  2. Rated voltage, rated current, breaking current, frequency, and insulation level.
  3. Control voltage, motor voltage, auxiliary contacts, and mechanism type.
  4. For VS1: switchgear model, fixed or withdrawable type, interlock, and panel drawings.
  5. For ZW32: CT/PT, controller, communication, recloser function, and mounting accessories.
  6. Destination country, standards, test documents, packing, and delivery schedule.

If you are choosing circuit breakers for a new project, start from the installation location and protection requirement. Review Ziyao Power circuit breaker solutions or send your breaker schedule for configuration support.
