Switchgear Selection Guide: MV & LV Applications

Selecting the right switchgear is one of the most critical decisions in electrical system design. Switchgear protects, controls, and isolates electrical equipment in both medium voltage (MV, 1–36 kV) and low voltage (LV, up to 1 kV) applications. This guide walks through the key parameters, standards, and decision criteria for making informed switchgear selections.

1. Understanding Switchgear Types

Medium Voltage (MV) Switchgear

  • • Voltage range: 1 kV — 36 kV
  • • Metal-clad or metal-enclosed construction
  • • Circuit breakers: vacuum or SF6
  • • Common ratings: 12 kV, 24 kV, 36 kV
  • • Rated current: 630 A — 3150 A
  • • Short-circuit rating: 16 kA — 40 kA

Low Voltage (LV) Switchgear

  • • Voltage range: up to 1 kV
  • • Fixed or withdrawable designs
  • • MCCB / ACB circuit breakers
  • • Common ratings: 400V, 690V
  • • Rated current: up to 6300 A
  • • Short-circuit rating: up to 100 kA

2. Key Selection Parameters

ParameterDescriptionGuidance
Rated Voltage (Ur)Maximum system voltageSelect ≥ system nominal voltage
Rated Current (Ir)Continuous current capacityInclude 20% future expansion margin
Short-Circuit Rating (Isc)Fault current withstand (1s or 3s)Based on fault level study (IEC 60909)
Internal Arc Class (IAC)Arc fault containmentIAC-A FLR for operator safety
IP RatingIngress protectionIP4X indoor / IP54 outdoor

3. Protection Relay Selection

Modern switchgear relies on microprocessor-based protection relays (IEDs) for comprehensive system protection. Key protection functions include:

  • Overcurrent (50/51): Phase and earth fault protection with IDMT curves (IEC 60255)
  • Earth Fault (50N/51N): Sensitive earth fault detection for isolated/resistance-earthed networks
  • Differential (87T): Transformer differential protection for internal fault detection
  • Arc Flash Detection: Optical sensors combined with current supervision for ultra-fast arc fault clearance
  • Under/Over Voltage (27/59): Bus voltage monitoring and automatic transfer schemes

4. IEC 62271 Compliance

IEC 62271 is the primary international standard for high-voltage switchgear and controlgear. Key parts relevant to MV switchgear selection:

  • IEC 62271-1: Common specifications — general requirements
  • IEC 62271-100: AC circuit-breakers — type testing and routine tests
  • IEC 62271-200: Metal-enclosed switchgear up to 52 kV — design, construction, type tests
  • IEC 62271-102: Disconnectors and earthing switches

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What's the difference between metal-clad and metal-enclosed switchgear?

Metal-clad switchgear has individual compartments for each major component (busbar, circuit breaker, cable connection) separated by earthed metal barriers. Metal-enclosed switchgear may share compartments. Metal-clad offers superior safety and is the preferred choice for MV applications above 12 kV.

Q: How do I determine the required short-circuit rating?

Perform a short-circuit study per IEC 60909 to calculate the maximum prospective fault current at the switchgear location. Select a short-circuit rating (typically 16 kA, 25 kA, 31.5 kA, or 40 kA for 1 second) that exceeds the calculated value with a safety margin of at least 10%.

Q: Can LV switchgear be installed outdoors?

Yes, but it requires weatherproof enclosures with minimum IP54 rating, corrosion-resistant materials (stainless steel or powder-coated steel), anti-condensation heaters, and proper sunshade provisions. For extreme environments, consider IP65 enclosures with active cooling.
